<image:title>Our Story - Born on the shores of Indawgyi Lake, Myanmar.</image:title>
<image:caption>Pink Headed Duck Coffee first began as a boutique café at Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary before migrating to New Orleans to continue telling the story of Myanmar specialty coffee to the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - The inspiration.</image:title>
<image:caption>The name honors the elusive Pink Headed Duck, a rare species native to the wetlands of eastern India and Myanmar and feared extinct since the 1950s. More recently, however, a series of credible yet unconfirmed sightings by fishermen in northern Myanmar has led some experts and hopeful bird watchers to believe it still might roam the impenetrable landscapes of this region.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - About Myanmar Specialty Coffee.</image:title>
<image:caption>Myanmar, a tropical and mountainous country in Southeast Asia, has seen exponential growth in its green coffee beans for sale and specialty coffee sector overall. Starting in 2013, a USAID-led overhaul not only streamlined the entire supply chain but also transformed Myanmar coffee from the lowest quality to specialty grade in just one harvest—a historic transformation in the coffee world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - Our partners, Sawbwa Coffee.</image:title>
<image:caption>Started in 2018, Sawbwa Coffee Company is the largest specialty coffee roastery in Myanmar and recently obtained its export license in May 2021. Their on-the-ground logistical support and partnerships with smallholder farmer associations guarantees a smooth supply chain from the hills of Shan State, where the coffee grows, to export in the southern port city of Yangon.</image:caption>

Sawbwa Coffee, our local partner, has spent more time in these villages than any other, with head farmer Khun Sein Shwe (middle photo at bottom), and pre-financed coffee infrastructure to further the transition from poppy growing for opiates to specialty coffee.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sitting on a geopolitical fault line, the Hopong Region has long seen conflict between local militias and the country’s central military. This fighting together with higher altitudes, which make very little possible to grow here, allowed cartels to take advantage by exploiting a crop that generated many smallholders’ main revenue—until now. The local leadership in the region saw the USAID-WinRock coffee program emerging and took a huge leap of faith to join in order to create higher-wage and more inclusive livelihoods for local families.</image:caption>

Around the world, however, this co-op is most renowned for its dry natural processed beans. In 2019, our export partner Sawbwa Coffee’s pre-financing of Indigo Mountain allowed the co-op to establish a new office in Hopong and vastly increase their drying beds and processing facilities - with Indigo Mountain growing from two to six farms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Three Khuns - “Each year we’re expanding production, from 9 metric tons during the 2022 harvest to 14 metric tons last season.”</image:title>
<image:caption>Three Khuns is a producer consortium within the Indigo Mountain co-op in Hopong, Myanmar, organized by members coming from the Pa-O ethnic group. The three founders – Khun Tun Lin, Khun Kyaw Thein, and Khun Kyaw Min Htike (pictured right) – started organizing the group in November, 2020, before growing the company to include 16 members in 2025. Every year they’ve been expanding production, with 9 metric tons (MT) during the 2022 harvest and 14 MT in 2023. Yet nearby conflict this season limited production to 5 MT. Curious about the name? In the Shan and Thai languages, ‘Khun’ often precedes names as a sign of respect and is the equivalent of ‘Mr.’ in English.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As one was one of the earliest Myanmar specialty coffees to land in the United States, Mya Ze Di remains a time-tested favorite for roasters big and small. The Danu farmers here tend to their plots, mostly between one to five acres, picking cherries in the morning before bringing to Mya Ze Di’s bustling coffee market (pictured below) and finally delivering to drying stations in the evening. Together, these farmers make up one of Shwe Taung Thu’s larger micro-lots, with over 100 members and covering a total production area of 18 hectares (44 acres). And their coffee consistently stands out: expect a lightly zesty and jasmine-like acidity, a sweet and fruity flavor, and a wonderfully dry finish.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mya Paw Saw - “An incredibly unique coffee, which was unlike anything I have had to-date.” -Andrew Pautler, Pull & Pour Coffee</image:title>
<image:caption>Mya Paw Saw was one of the first villages our Myanmar partner, Sawbwa Coffee, visited soon after its founding in 2018—and it’s a relationship that all of us want to continue connecting roasters with across the US. The majority of smallholder farmers here are women, and the high-quality dry naturals they produce are best known for their floral aroma, bright acidity and deeply sweet and fruity flavors.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bant Sawk - Bant Sawk is the village where it all started for Indigo Mountain co-op.</image:title>
<image:caption>Bant Sawk, a new offering we’re honored to be adding to our current lineup from Indigo Mountain, holds a prominent place in Myanmar’s specialty scene. Started by head farmer Khun Saw Tun Aung (pictured right), and long before specialty coffee became popular in the region, he and his community have been leading the charge since 2014 – building on UNODC and USAID programs – to make an enduring model for local communities transitioning from poppy farming to specialty coffee. Their model, in turn, became the foundation that evolved into today’s Indigo Mountain co-op. The results are clear: in a village of 160 households, over 100 now grow specialty coffee.</image:caption>

<image:title>Three Khuns Anaerobic</image:title>
<image:caption>Three Khuns is a producer consortium within the Indigo Mountain co-op in Hopong, Myanmar, organized by members coming from the Pa-O ethnic group. The three founders – Khun Kyaw Min Htike, Khun Tun Lin, and Khun Kyaw Thein – started organizing the group in November, 2020, before growing the company to include 16 members in 2025. For their anaerobic natural, cherries are processed following Indigo Mountain standards for dry naturals until they lose a portion of their weight. At this point, they are transferred and stored in clean, food-grade plastic tanks for 2-5 days at 15-25°C until the smell of red wine appears. The cherries are then returned to drying beds and slow dried until they reach ~11% moisture content. Curious about the name? In the Shan and Thai languages, ‘Khun’ often precedes names as a sign of respect and is the equivalent of ‘Mr.’ in English.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ga Naing Yar - “A surprise winner of Myanmar’s 3rd Annual Cupping Competition.” - Winrock International, 2017</image:title>
<image:caption>During the 2016-2017 harvest, Ga Naing Yar became one of the 22 coffee communities producing specialty coffee in Shan State, gathering its first 1.5 metric tons of natural-processed coffee. This was the community’s entrance into the ongoing USAID-Winrock program, which was transforming the country’s specialty sector at the time, and what a profound entrance Ga Naing Yar made. Myanmar’s third national cupping competition was held in March 2017, and this community’s coffee scored 88.5 points—the highest scoring in the country. Since then, it’s become a connoisseur favorite around the world, and we’re thrilled to connect more U.S. roasters with this community for the first time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Why Dry Naturals - "Myanmar has a competitive advantage over other specialty coffee producing countries. The weather is typically dry and sunny throughout the harvest season, which provides excellent conditions for drying. The terroir produces “clean, sparkling” dry naturals that are unlike any other country. Coffees from one community to the next express different flavor notes, which appeals to curators of micro-lots who seek unique taste experiences." – Lorene Flaming, from USAID’s Value Chain for Rural Development Report, 2019</image:title>

Ever since, it’s carried on as a community with an amazing women-led leadership team that works on processing and QC with all smallholder farmers, who grow an average of 1/2 acre of coffee trees per family. Coffee has also become Oat Twin’s top cash crop, with family farms mostly growing the Catuai variety. The community, led by Daw Ma Lar Khaing (orange shirt in above cover photo) now provides for over 350 producing members in the village, with the village nestled up at the edge of some higher mountains where most family farms are located.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mong Nwet</image:title>
<image:caption>As one of the earliest communities to join Indigo Mountain co-op in 2019, farmer families in Mong Nwet have come to trust the dependability of specialty coffee over the years—first during the COVID-19 pandemic and now in the years since Myanmar’s 2021 military coup. The village is tucked away slightly lower in a high-altitude valley (see map below), so Pa-O farmers here also produce other cash crops including avocado, ginger, turmeric, and cheroot leaf, which are renowned here in the making of Burmese cigars. The name Mong Nwet translates to “Close to the River” and is also located not too far from a number of other long-established Pa-O villages. This includes the Bant Sawk community, which sits opposite the mountain peak east of Mong Nwet, and was the village that kicked off Indigo Mountain co-op in 2018. Keen to support an enduring model for local residents transitioning from poppy farming to specialty coffee, Mong Nwet is now a growing part of this close community across the Pa-O Self Administered Zone in Shan State.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As one of the newer members to join Indigo Mountain co-op, smallholder farm families in Naung Khar, led by head farmer Khun Moe Wyne (pictured here), have been seeing the more inclusive and higher-wage opportunities coming from specialty coffee from afar before getting involved themselves. This type of prove-by-example ripple effect has been Indigo Mountain’s goal since they started back in 2018. For farmers in Naung Khar, the new livelihood options from coffee production have given many more of a choice to stay with their families – rather than relocate to cities or abroad to find work – move away from the risks of poppy cultivation, and help restore the long-term value in their land. As such, we’re honored to be including their latest harvest as part of our current lineup from Indigo Mountain for the first time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Htam Pha Yar Village sits right below 1,200 meters, with all coffee farms located above 1,230 meters on the nearby mountains. As one of the latest communities to join Indigo Mountain co-op, the farmers led by U Tun Kyaw (second from right) of Htam Pha Yar worked their way up to the village’s first international export in 2022. Elders in the community say that their village started roughly a century ago when families came in search of better land to grow crops. The past few decades, that has mostly meant poppy farming across this region because of ongoing conflict, but Indigo Mountain’s mission since the start has been to create a sustainable model for local communities transitioning from poppy farming to specialty coffee – regardless of the ever-changing external factors. Following the lead of this initial group of smallholders in 2018, other Pa-O communities including Htam Pha Yar have been learning the alternative livelihoods available to them—with the higher-wage and more inclusive opportunities from specialty coffee now at the forefront for many farming families.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sin Net Chaung - “A great example of the brisk, clean red berry and citrus profile for which Myanmar is quickly becoming famous.” -Atlas Coffee, USA</image:title>
